Gig Description
The Welsh Encontro 2010 is continuing the emerging tradition of Welsh Encontros. The first (2004) and second (2005) were held in Cardiff, the third (2007) organised by Samba Tawe in Swansea were all great successes and built relationships with bands from across the UK, Ireland and Brittany. The Welsh Encontro 2010 aims to build on this.
The Encontro will again be based in the Urdd Centre (part of the Millennium Centre) in the heart of Cardiff Bay. There is limited accommodation available at the Urdd Centre itself but places will need to be booked quickly!
The outline programme comprises
- High quality intermediate and advanced level training workshops with reputable international trainers.
- Opportunities for all the visiting bands to play to the public in the city centre and Cardiff Bay area.
- A showcase of music and dance at the Coal Exchange featuring performing artists from across the UK.
- Sambadrome – a mass performance of all the visiting samba bands in Roald Dahl Plass, Cardiff Bay.
You can see further details and book Accommodation, Workshops, Showcase tickets and busking slots online using the Welsh Encontro 2010 menu on the left.

Venue Description
Roald Dahl Plass (Welsh: Plas Roald Dahl) is a public plaza in Cardiff Bay. It is named after Cardiff-born author Roald Dahl, and is located on the coast along the south of the city centre. The square is home to the Senedd (Welsh Assembly Building) and the Wales Millennium Centre, a performing arts centre. The bowl-like shape of the plaza has made it a popular amphitheatre for hosting open-air concerts.
Formerly named the Oval Basin, the area was one of the docks for a thriving coal port during the latter half the 19th century and much of the 20th century. Following World War II, the plaza entered a period of decay and dereliction until the 1980s, when the Cardiff Bay area was regenerated.
